The Bhairav Kunda Trek is a spiritual journey located to the Northeast of the Kathmandu Valley, near the Tibetan border. This trek can be classified as a pilgrimage trek as it leads to the petrified Bhairav Kunda Lake, situated at an altitude of 4,250 meters. The Bhairav Kunda Lake is a pilgrimage site that is visited by both Hindu and Buddhist followers during the festival held every year in the month of Bhadra, which is considered a prime position among both religions. The lake is named after Lord Bhairav, who is an image of Lord Shiva associated with destruction.
In addition to being a spiritual trek, the Bhairav Kunda Trek is also an adventurous and stirring trekking trail that offers splendid views of various mountains, including the chain of Peak Dorje Lakpa at 6,966 meters, Madiya at 6,257 meters, and Phurbi Ghhyachu at 6,637 meters in the Jugal Himal range. This trekking trail is also an opportunity to explore typical cultures and witness awe-inspiring Himalayan ranges. The trail begins from Jalbire, which is 81 kilometers northeast of the Kathmandu Valley. From Jalbire, the trail follows an old trade route between Nepal and Tibet to the Tibetan border, passing through small villages inhabited mainly by Gurungs, Newar, and Sherpa communities. The journey continues to ascend to est Camp at 3,150 meters, which is the base of Khani Gaon, heading along the thick alpine forest mainly containing Rhododendron and Oak with wild animals such as Red Panda, Snow Leopard, and Himalayan Black Bear, among others. The journey offers the pleasure of the amazing sound of birds chirping.
The journey continues to Pati, where trekkers may experience the common sickness of altitude sickness. To acclimatize to the climate and geography, trekkers are advised to rest and take in the splendid view of several wonderful Tibetan Plateaus and peaks in the Jugal Himal Range. The journey then ascends a steep hill, making an exhausting journey up to the altitude of 4,250 meters to arrive at Bhairav Kunda. Nearby the Bhairav Kunda Lake, there is a temple of Lord Shiva, which is visited by followers who pray for their homage to the Lord and take a bath in the Bhairav Kunda. The Bhairav Kunda Trek is an excellent trekking destination that allows one to explore and observe its vicinity, and then descend to Sherpa Gaon, traveling around the dense forest, splendid range of Jugal Himal, and more.
The Bhairab Kund Trek is a short camping hike in Nepal that is off the beaten path and filled with adventure. Our itinerary begins with an exploration of Kathmandu Valley before driving north to the “gateway to Tibet” along the Bhote Koshi river valley to reach the trek starting point, Jalbire. The Bhairav Kunda ascent leads us through friendly ethnic villages and beautiful forests before reaching the highest point of the trek at Bhairab Kund, a secret lake named after a destructive incarnation of the Hindu God Shiva. This hidden gem is located near the Tibet border and offers a classic lake view with an incredible mountain panorama. We end our trekking experience by driving back to Kathmandu.
The highlights of our trip include a short camping trekking experience to Bhairab Kunda, full board meals with tea and coffee on the trek, an experienced trek guide with a supporting crew, trek gear like a sleeping bag and warm jacket provided, and a complimentary trek duffle bag and t-shirt.
The 13-Day Bhairab Kunda Trek is suitable for trekkers who are bound by time. If you are searching for a more relaxed itinerary, then you can choose one of our other trekking packages such as Langtang Gosaikunda Trek 19 Days or Baden Powel Scout Trek 17 Days.
