Island  Peak is a highly sought-after trekking peak located in Nepal. For those who seek a challenging and exhilarating climbing experience beyond just trekking, the Island Peak climbing trip presents an excellent opportunity to stand at an impressive height of 6189 meters and relish the sense of achievement that comes with scaling a stunning peak in the Himalayas. This expedition-style climb, which grades as Alpine PD+, is physically demanding but not technically challenging, making it suitable for novice climbers and experienced trekkers alike. However, to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure, a good level of physical fitness and a positive attitude are essential.

The Island Peak climbing trip is the first step before attempting other giant peaks, and it boasts an incredible success rate. In 2016, 51 trekkers out of 62 successfully scaled Island Peak, while in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023, over 90% of climbers made it to the summit.

To ensure proper safety during the expedition, the Island Peak climbing trip is run with an Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek and a proper safety backup. The journey begins with an exciting flight to Lukla, from where trekkers hike to Namche and Dingboche, where they spend two nights adjusting to the thinner air. On the way up to EBC, the less-frequented route via Phortse village is taken. Climbers then ascend to EBC and Kala Pathar before heading to the base camp of Imjatse Peak, where they stay at a fully supported tented camp at 5000 meters. After proper acclimatization, climbers scale Island Peak.

To ensure climbers’ safety, medically trained and experienced guides lead the trip, carrying the required medicines and leading the team to the summit and back. Oxygen cylinders are provided to safeguard all members and crew in thinner oxygen conditions at high altitudes. Additionally, a dedicated porter is assigned to each trekker, allowing them to adjust their journey’s pace and make itinerary adjustments if necessary.

To prepare climbers for the climb, a special climbing clinic training course is designed to provide the necessary climbing skills. It boosts the confidence of all team members for a safe and successful climb. The course is organized at the base camp of Island Peak just before the summit push, where experienced climbing guides demonstrate the climbing gear and fix new ropes. Climbers practice with Jumar, Figure of eight, ropes, ice axes, crampons, and other equipment, and check their climbing boots with crampons.

The Island Peak expedition summit day is a challenging but rewarding experience. It begins with an exciting scramble along a rock ridge to a glacier, followed by a steep snow headwall leading to the summit. Experienced climbing guides fix NEW ropes and use Jumar and harness on strenuous and difficult sections of the climb. Climbers ascend a 60-70-degree face about 150 meters to the summit ridge, from where they can enjoy breathtaking views of Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu, Baruntse, and Amadablam.

To climb Island Peak, proper acclimation is a must before the summit push. Climbing the peak at 6189 meters is physically challenging, and there are some challenges and difficulties on the way to the summit, such as walking around boulders, crevasses crossing, and a headwall inclined to push. Two to three months of trip preparation before arriving in Nepal is required, and mental preparation and positive thinking are keys to a successful adventure. A fit and experienced trekker can join the climb to Island Peak with an EBC hike, but climbing these trekking peaks requires a special climbing permit that only Nepal-based registered trekking companies can obtain.

Deepak Adventure Travel and Tour company is a top ten award-winning company, that organizes peak climbing in Nepal and provides all personal and group climbing gear for the climbing trip, including climbing boots, helmet, ice axe, crampons, Jumar, Figure of eight, harness, and carabiners, as well as climbing ropes and tents for members and crew. Consequently, climbers don’t have to hire or buy any climbing gear for the Island Peak climb, ensuring a safe, hassle-free, and cost-effective climbing experience. The best climbing times are March, April, May, October, and November, with the company also offering customized winter climbing in December, which offers a clear sky but is colder at night. The Island Peak climbing trip takes four days to climb from the base camp to the summit.
